To the new European Commission and Parliament

Context

Following the European elections of June 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled her final list of candidates for European Commissioners. Considering the anti-nuclear backgrounds of some nominees for key positions within the Commission, as well as their statements during public hearings conducted by the European Parliament, we have serious doubts about the stance this new Commission will take on nuclear energy.

Is another term of a European executive maintaining an anti-nuclear position inevitable? Voices of Nuclear remain hopeful that a change of course is still possible. By sending an open letter to the Parliament and the Commission, we aim to appeal to the democratic values and rational judgment of our representatives, urging them to support the development of nuclear energy in Europe.

3 reasons to believe in change

Euratom treaty

We tend to forget, but nuclear energy is at the heart of the European integration project. The Euratom Treaty, signed in 1958, is more relevant than ever. Current geopolitical events require the Commission to take a strong and unequivocal stance in support of nuclear energy. This is crucial for the continent’s strategic independence and will condition the EU’s capacity to reindustrialize while meeting its climate and environmental goals.
